“Today you are You. This is truer than true. There is no-one alive who is Youer than You.” Korey Wise
The quote is not extracted from the 4-part series “When They See Us” directed by Ava DuVernay. Still the earth-shattering series gives us a tremendous lesson on truth, but also on the sense of self.
When Korey is bewildered and confused by the situation he finds himself in following the trust he put in prosecutor Elizabeth Lederer and says “She is using me against me.”, this is when you realise the depth of the betrayal and the atrocity committed by the authorities and the justice system. But this is also when you realise how much this situation forced these 5 boys to really look into their inner mirror and question who they are really. What is the most profound truth about themselves? This one who is honest and innocent or that one who is confused and speaks ill about himself? Am I my soul or my ego? Am I love or am I fear? Am I self-love or self-hatred?
Kudos to the families of these 5 young men as well who supported them all through their horrific ordeal. They certainly played an immense role in helping these 5 boys building their healthy sense of self!!!
